Matthew Perry claims that following a medical emergency related to addiction, he only had a "2 percent chance to live."
Matthew Perry claims that due to opioid abuse, his colon burst and he nearly died after suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding.
Before the publication of his new memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing on November 1, Perry opened up for the first time in a People magazine cover story about some aspects of his addiction past, which stretches back to his mid-20s and early years on the NBC smash Friends.
The actor claims that at one time, a medical issue brought on by his addiction gave him a "2 percent chance" of surviving. When Perry's colon broke, he also experienced a medical emergency. Perry had a gastrointestinal perforation, which is a hole that forms in the wall of a gastro-related organ such the large or small intestine, oesophagus, or stomach.
When he was initially sent to the hospital, "the doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live," he says. "I was placed on a device known as an ECMO machine, which manages your heart and lungs' breathing for you. That is referred to be a Hail Mary. Nobody gets over that.
Perry finally spent weeks in the ICU following a colon issue brought on by his drug abuse. He needed to use a colostomy bag for nine months after spending two weeks in a coma and another five months receiving medical attention.
In the interview, Perry also talks about how dependent he is on drink and opioids, mentioning a period when he was a Friends actor and used 55 Vicodin per day. He also lost weight, coming in at 128 pounds. He adds his Friends co-stars "were sympathetic, and they were patient" in supporting him through relapses throughout the years despite the obvious changes in his looks.
He explains, "I didn't know how to stop." "I would begin packing if the police showed up at my house and threatened to put me in jail if I drank tonight. Because the illness and addiction are progressive, I was unable to stop. Therefore, as you age, it only gets worse.
The actor admitted to the magazine that he has been struggling with addiction ever since he was cast in the programme at the age of 24, despite having previously spoken about his substance use disorder and three-month hospital admission. He started abusing alcohol at that point.
"I could kind of manage it. However, by the time I was 34, I had gotten myself into a lot of difficulty, he claims. "However, there were years throughout that time when I was sober. Nine was the year that I remained sober the entire time. And guess for which season I was a best actor nominee? That should tell me something, I thought.
Perry says he's determined to help others who battle with addiction and adds of his current recovery, "Your sober date changes, but that's all that changes." Perry has undergone 14 stomach surgeries and 15 stints to treatment. As long as you were able to battle your way back without dying, you retain everything you previously learned.
"Five people were placed on an ECMO machine that night, and the other four perished while I lived," he continues. So, the crucial query is: Why? Why was I selected? There must be a motive of some sort.
